Hours of training, sweat and sacrifice, all led to this. Mindfull Senior Business Intelligence Consultant Johann Kassier will tick off two milestones on Sunday - tackling a mammoth 87km run on his 40th Birthday.
In the name of a good cause, Johann will lace up his trainers for Comrades, the world’s largest and oldest ultra-marathon spanning 87km from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
Starting at the coast, he will climb through an area known as the ‘valley of a thousand hills’ and finish in the capital Pietermaritzburg, all to raise funds for Ithemba Projects.
The charity needs money to complete a community centre being built near Johann’s home in South Africa.
iThemba Projects was gifted a piece of land by the Nkosi (local chief) and asked to erect the centre as a ‘place of hope’ for the community of Sweetwaters.
By hiring local, unskilled community members and using eco-friendly rammed-earth technology, they’re creating a sustainable hub, focused on people.
Once finished, the centre will also host after-school programmes for children and young people, while serving as headquarters for the Year of Your Life youth volunteer programme.
To qualify for comrades, Johann had to finish a 42km marathon within a set timeframe – which required extreme dedication and many hours of training.
